Shanghai Stock Market

The Shanghai stock market is located in Shanghai, China and is the largest stock exchange in mainland China. The Shanghai stock market is also the first exchange in mainland China. Market capitalisation of the companies listed on the Shanghai stock market reached over 2.3 trillion US dollars. This ranked the exchange the fifth largest in the world in terms of market capitalisation. At the end of 2007, the Shanghai Stock Market had 860 company listings with over 71 million investors.

The main trading system of the Shanghai stock market is an electronic system, which is operated from terminals in firms or on the 3,600-square-meter trading floor of the exchange. This is the largest trading floor in the Asia-Pacific region. The Shanghai stock market is connected to over 5,000 trading terminals. Shanghai stock market trading hours are based on bidding sessions. The morning session from 9:15 to 9:25 AM is reserved for centralised competitive pricing. Another morning session from 9:30 to 11:30 AM is used for consecutive bidding. The afternoon session runs from 1:00 to 3:00 PM and is reserved for consecutive bidding as well. The main index used in the Shanghai stock market is the SSE Composite Index, which tracks both A and B shares.
