Tokyo Stock Market

The Tokyo stock market is the largest stock market of Japan. In terms of market value, the Tokyo stock market is the world's second largest stock exchange. As of June 2008, the Tokyo stock market listed around 2,300 companies. Over 30 of the companies listed were foreign companies. The total market capitalisation of the Tokyo stock market was over 5 trillion US dollars. The Tokyo stock market had a turnover of over 90% of Japan's total securities transactions. Its closest competitor, the Osaka Stock Exchange, accounted for approximately 4% of total securities transactions in Japan.

The Tokyo stock market features three divisions. One section is dedicated to large companies, while the second section is intended for mid-sized companies. The third section, which is referred to as the Mothers section, is for startup companies on the high-growth high-risk level. Trading hours in the Tokyo stock market are from 9:00 to 11:00 AM and from 12:30 to 3:00 PM. The Nikkei 225 and the TOPIX indexes are the two most notable indexes that track the Tokyo stock market. Since 2005, the Tokyo stock market has focused on improving its infrastructure to avoid failures while increasing capacity for transactions.
