The Toronto stock market is Canada's leading stock exchange. With company listings from Canada, the United States and other countries, the Toronto stock market is the world's seventh largest stock exchange and the third largest exchange in North America. Averaging 250 million share trades per day, the Toronto stock market lists 4,000 securities. While the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) only handles senior equities, the TSX Venture Exchange handles smaller companies that are relatively new and experiencing high growth.
The Toronto stock market lists more oil and gas companies than any other exchange in the world. Over 430 oil and gas companies were listed on the Toronto stock market by the end of June 2007. These companies combined for a total market capitalisation of nearly 545 billion dollars. Likewise, Canada's Big Five is also listed on the Toronto stock market. The Big Five is composed of Canada's five major commercial banks. These banks are the Bank of Montreal, the Toronto-Dominion Bank, the Royal Bank of Canada, the Bank of Nova Scotia and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce
(CIBC). The Toronto stock market trading hours run from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Eastern Time. Extended trading hours in the Toronto stock market are allowed between 4:15 and 5:00 PM.
